U.S. Immigration Regulations require proof of financial support for the J-1 and all dependents during the entire J-1 program.
The minimum financial support requirements are as follows:

J-1 Exchange Visitor: $20,760 per year ($1,730 per month);
Spouse: $6,708 per year ($559 per month);
Child: $3,912 per year ($326 per month).

Speak with an ISS Specialist to see if you need to provide additional financial support documentation.

U.S. Immigration regulations also require J-status scholars and their dependents to maintain health insurance during the entire J-1 program.
