Nearly 500 Huskers helped shape university’s Grand Challenges

When called by Chancellor Ronnie Green to help focus the future of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln research and creative activity, nearly 500 faculty, staff and students from 195 campus units came together in summer 2020.

Their task — to identify a set of major societal issues to be solved through interdisciplinary collaboration. Their priorities were narrowed to seven Grand Challenges, which Chancellor Ronnie Green announced in his Feb. 15 State of Our University address.

‘Learn International Nebraska’ webinar is Feb. 22, 23

As a transformative, world-leading institution, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln plays an active role in engaging with international partners overseas and locally, as well as providing students global learning experiences. On Feb. 22 at 4 p.m., the University’s Office of Global Strategies and Yeutter Institute of International Trade and Finance will highlight some of this work at the Nebraska Department of Economic Development’s “Learn International Nebraska” webinar.

Grad student gets snowy introduction to Nebraska

The day after arriving in Lincoln to start his master’s degree in agronomy and horticulture at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, Juan Jiménez woke up Jan. 23 and thought it seemed exceptionally sunny.

Not quite.

He looked outside and was greeted by something he’d never seen before — snow. About 1.5 inches had coated the ground.

Reflecting on a year for social change

Each year, the University of Nebraska–Lincoln memorializes the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through a week-long celebration, honoring his life and work while recognizing campus and community members whose impacts epitomize the ideals, life, and work of the civil rights leader. This work has become more pronounced and visible during historical unrest and a surgency of social and political activists in the last year.
