30, 60, and 90-day forecasts of dry and wet conditions relative to the historic record for the Lower 48 United States use groundwater data from the NASA/GFZ GRACE-FO satellites for the initial conditions. This comparison shows the groundwater forecast made for August 2019 compared to the output based on the satellite observations for the same month.
NASA, University of Nebraska Release New Global Groundwater Maps and U.S. Drought Forecasts

NASA researchers have developed new satellite-based, weekly global maps of soil moisture and groundwater wetness conditions and one to three-month U.S. forecasts of each product. While maps of current dry/wet conditions for the United States have been available since 2012, this is the first time they have been available globally. These maps are distributed online by the National Drought Mitigation Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) to support U.S. and global drought monitoring.

Mighty mouse: Storz discovers world’s highest-elevation mammal

Nebraska's Jay Storz encountered the yellow-rumped leaf-eared mouse on a February expedition to the summit of Llullaillaco, a dormant volcano straddling Chile and Argentina. He had climbed for eight hours — Had it really been just eight? Nine, maybe? More? — after the avalanche risk of a snow-packed ravine on the main path had forced him onto a more circuitous, arduous route.

International Student and Others Honored with Student Luminary Awards

Ten University of Nebraska–Lincoln students have been honored with Student Luminary Awards for their exceptional leadership and commitment to improving campus life. The awards, which are presented annually to eight undergraduate and two graduate students, were announced during a campus reception March 13. Those selected demonstrate a significant and active commitment to inclusion, are advocates for positive change, initiate activities that help every Husker feel valued, strive for personal well-being and model academic excellence inside and outside the classroom.
