Students invited to learn about Fulbright Awards
The UNL Office of Fellowships, led by Dr. Laura Damuth, will begin hosting information sessions on the Fulbright awards on Mar. 12. Fulbright awards support graduate study, research, or English teaching abroad. Grants are awarded to graduating seniors, alums, and graduate students in all academic fields and in the creative and performing arts. It is never too soon to explore the Fulbright website and meet with Dr. Damuth about this extraordinary international exchange program.
Information session hosted on post-graduate opportunities in the UK
Join the Office of Fellowships on Feb. 26 for a special information session on post-graduate opportunities available in the UK. Students interested in pursuing a graduate program in the UK can consider applying for the Rhodes, Gates Cambridge, and Churchill scholarships. Many of these pretigious awards are due around October, but campus nomination deadlines begin on April 15.
Workshops for hosts of international scholars, employees begin Feb. 19
The International Student and Scholar Office will offer three upcoming workshops for faculty and staff who host and support international scholars and employees, running from February to April. All workshops are free but require registration.

March 3 Lunch Seminar to Discuss Virtual Exchange
Dipra Jha, associate professor of practice and director of global engagement for the Hospitality, Restaurant, Tourism Management program at UNL, is the keynote speaker for a lunch-and learn on virtual classrooms on Mar. 3. Hosted by IANR Global Engagement, Jha will share his experience in conducting courses with virtual classroom, an exciting technological and pedagogical inroad into connecting students from around the world.
Faculty startup Virtual Incision receives $20M investment
Virtual Incision, a Nebraska Innovation Campus-based medical device company founded by University of Nebraska faculty, announced earlier this month it raised $20 million in Series B+ investment funding. The venture capital funding will support regulatory and clinical programs leading to commercialization of the company’s surgical robot platform, called MIRA, which stands for “miniaturized in vivo robotic assistant.”
First Rwanda Night celebrated culture and “second home” at UNL
On Feb. 1, the Rwandan Student Association and AgShields hosted the first Rwanda Night celebration at UNL. Spearheaded by Rwandan scholars from the CASNR CUSP program, the night included dancing, singing, a traditional play, fashion and Rwandan food. Special guests for the night included the Ambassador of Rwanda Mathilde Mukantabana, Chancellor Green and his wife, members of the Nebraska National Guard, and more.
Blessing finds his place in Lincoln working on immigrant and refugee resettlement
Alumnus Ted Blessing was told that it would be difficult to find a career in refugee resettlement as programs nationwide faced budget cuts. Nevertheless, armed with college experience volunteering with a refugee resettlement organization and his education in global studies, political science, and human right and humanitarian aid—Blessing persisted. Now, he’s working as an Outreach and Volunteer Coordinator for Lutheran Family Services’ Refugee Resettlement and Support Program.
International alumnus Suratman says UNL experience key to preparing him for future career as deputy vice chancellor
Mohd Nazip Suratman first came to UNL all the way from his home country of Malaysia in the mid-1990s to complete his Master of Science from the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Wildlife. Suratman, now the deputy vice-chancellor for Research and Innovation at the Universiti Teknologi MARA in Malaysia, says “there is nothing more valuable than the experience I gained from completing my degree from UNL.” He credits the range of technical and professional courses available from what’s now the School of Natural Resources, and encourages students to remain motivated in postgraduate research.
